Short Biography I was born on the east coast and spent my early years zig-zagging in a westerly
direction, finishing high school on the Texas gulf coast. I got my B. A. from
Rice University in Houston, spending three very enjoyable years in Phil Brooks'
Molecular Beam Lab there. After a brief stint in the Thermal Physics lab at Dow
Chemical, I migrated on to graduate school at Berkeley, completing a Ph.D. with
Yuan T. Lee in 1981. I learned how to play with lasers during a postdoc stay in
the Zare lab at Stanford, then
joined the chemistry faculty at SUNY Stony Brook in 1983. In March 1995 the
Anderson group packed our bags (and two moving vans) and hauled the whole lab
to the U of Utah.
At
various times I have also spent extended periods at the Institute for Molecular
Science (Okazaki) and Genesis Research Institute (Tokyo) in Japan, the Physics
Departments of the University of Freiburg and University of Köln, Germany,
and L.U.R.E. at the University of Paris in Orsay. I
enjoy nordic and alpine
skiing, mountain biking, hiking, camping, and most other out
door activities.
