Well, that seems to sum it up pretty nicely....*pointing*....as you can see, the core activity here is synthesis. That takes in a lot of ground....first one needs something to synthesize (structure), and then one needs a set of tools to go about building that structure (reactions). One also has to worry about a lot of other issues....selectivity between similar functional groups, for example, and (this almost goes without saying) stereochemistry. Oh...you also need a plan...a set of blueprints as it were, before you start deploying your tools. Don't get too fond of it though, because it will surely be revised many times before you are done. It's also really rewarding to fashion your own tools and use them in building your structure, and this is one of the things we do as well. Better tools allow for better plans, and it all goes round and round...
