Faculty Awards

Dale Poulter has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences. This is a most deserving honor recognizing Dale's contributions to chemistry and science, and bringing important visibility to the high level of excellence within the Chemistry Department and at the University of Utah.
Vale Molinero has been awarded a Beckman Young Investigator Award. Cindy Burrows has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
John Conboy has been promoted to the rank of a Full Professor, Ilya Zharov has been promoted to the rank of an Associate Professor (with tenure).

Student Awards

Congratulations to Theresa Cooper (Armentrout Group) and Robert DeMille (Molinero Group) who won Physical Division Awards for their posters at the recent ACS National Meeting in Salt Lake City. Theresa presented a posteR titled "Environmental Issues and Ions: Absolute Hydration Energies of Cd2+ and Zn2+" and Robert's poster was titled "Coarse-Grained Ions Without Charges: Reproducing the Solvation Structure of NaCl with Short-Ranged Potentials".

Photonic crystal structure in beetle scales

Michael Bartl, Jeremy Galusha and colleagues from BYU and IBM reported the discovery of a diamond-based photonic crystal found in iridescent scales of a Brazilian beetle (Phys. Rev. E 2008, 77, 050904(R)). The dicovered structure has one of the most-desired photonic architectures and is the first example of a diamond-based photonic crystal operating at visible wavelengths. learn more...
